Some ways our parents and educators are using the flashcards:
Winter Dramatic play Place blue and white felt on a table surrounded by jewels, fake snow, winter plants, pinecones, peg dolls, and the winter flashcards. Allow your child to let their imagination come to life by recreating winter scenes. This is a task best done independently.
Winter Animal Tracks Play: Place white playdough on a table with various winter animal figurines. Have your child press the animal feet into the snow. What do they notice about the animal tracks? How are they the same? How are they different?
Winter Cabin: Together gather nature objects from outside: pinecones, bark, branches, leaves, etc. Place the “Cabin” card for inspiration. Allow your child to use their nature pieces and/or recyclable objects to create their own winter cabin. To incorporate science, see if the cabin can stand in wind (use a blowdryer), if it falls down, how can we make it stronger?
Winter Sensory Table: Fill a tub with blue food coloured rice or water. Place real life objects of the flashcards in the tub such as holly, juniper berries, paper snowflakes, pieces of pine etc. Place the flashcards on the side of the tub along with an empty basket. Ask your child to find the objects in the tub and move them from the tub to the basket. You can also incorporate tweezers to enhance fine motor development.
Scavenger Hunt: Take the flashcards outside and incorporate them into a scavenger hunt where your child has to find objects that match the flashcard. They can then use a clipboard to trace the objects or try drawing them.
Holiday Baking: Use the “Gingerbread”, “Hot Chocolate” and “Christmas Cookies” cards together or on separate occasions to do some holiday baking! Have your child decorate their own cookies or gingerbread houses and put them on display before enjoying ! Perhaps take your hot chocolate outside on a wintery walk!
